As a result of the significant growth of the School and move to co-education, the provision of sport at Westonbirt has evolved rapidly and successfully in recent years.
Emphasis is placed on the holistic development of the player and sportsperson. This means that learning and refining the core skills required is vital and encouraged through the sessions but this sits alongside the values that sport brings such as: resilience; independence; teamwork; sportsmanship; courage and work ethic.
Children are encouraged to be competitive, determined and to give their all but at the same time to be evaluative of their performance, supportive of others, fair and most of all, to enjoy sport. Where children show a particular aptitude for sport, the School will encourage and assist in their development and support them with their journey.
With specialist sports coaches and outstanding facilities, our core sports are rugby, netball, hockey, cricket and swimming. In addition to this, cross country and athletics are part of the offering and additional lessons in sports such as fencing, judo, golf and tennis are also available.
The School’s major competitive sports for boys are rugby, hockey, cricket, athletics, swimming and tennis. For girls the competitive sports are lacrosse, netball, swimming, tennis, athletics and cricket.. In addition, the School runs a successful equestrian team.
Fixtures are played throughout the academic year against other independent and local schools and many students compete at county, regional, national and international level.
Football, golf, and basketball are also offered as co-curricular options. Within the PE programe students will experience a broad range of other sports such as badminton, volleyball, and rounders or softball. A range of Physical Education activities are also offered through the curriculum with GCSE PE and BTEC Sports including the Level 13 extended certificate. In addition, students are given the opportunity to take coaching qualifications.
Westonbirt boasts 210 acres of parkland grounds which provide the perfect platform for sporting excellence with a nine-hole golf course, lacrosse, hockey, cricket, football and rugby pitches and tennis and netball courts.
The Leisure Centre boasts an indoor 25m pool and fitness suite. A full size new flood lit Astro Turf recently opened and will be used as a multi purpose space by the sports department.
