Situated in the heart of the Cotswolds and working in partnership with leading local riding schools, Westonbirt has developed a comprehensive equestrian pathway for riders of all ages and abilities. Whether aspiring to compete at the highest level through our Equestrian Academy or getting into the saddle for the first time, pupils benefit from expert coaching, outstanding support and an equestrian programme that makes Westonbirt a natural choice for equestrian families from the UK and around the world.
The Westonbirt Equestrian Academy is our flagship programme, created for dedicated riders who are committed to developing their performance alongside an outstanding education. Â
Working with world-class training providers and coaches, the Academy provides talented riders with access to bespoke training programmes, competition opportunities and individual performance pathways tailored to their goals and ambitions. Â
Whether joining us from the UK or overseas, pupils benefit from a unique environment where sporting aspiration and academic excellence go hand in hand. Â
The Westonbirt Equestrian Academy has been created to support ambitious riders across a range of disciplines, including showjumping, dressage and eventing. Through partnerships with some of the country’s most respected equestrian professionals and training centres, pupils have access to exceptional coaching and development opportunities. Â
As part of the Academy, pupils benefit from:Â
Our Equestrian Academy is built on the belief that exceptional sporting performance and academic success go hand in hand. Every student in the academy is overseen by our Polo Team Manager and our Director of Sport, Dr Graham Williams, who holds a PhD in elite athlete development. Players are supported by a collaborative network of teachers, boarding staff and riding professionals who work together to ensure that training and competition complement, rather than compromise, academic progress. With personalised guidance, careful timetable management and outstanding pastoral care, pupils are able to pursue ambitious equestrian goals while flourishing in the classroom. Our aim is to develop well-rounded young people with the confidence, character and life skills to succeed at the highest level, whether their future lies in equestrian sport, university or professional life beyond Westonbirt. Â
For international families and those seeking a fully immersive equestrian experience, boarding at Westonbirt offers an ideal environment. Situated within easy reach of leading training centres, competition venues and equestrian events, the school enables pupils to access exceptional riding opportunities while remaining fully engaged in school life. Combined with outstanding pastoral care, extensive sporting facilities and a welcoming boarding community, Westonbirt provides a genuine home-from-home for ambitious young riders. For students wishing to bring their own horse, livery is arranged at high quality local facilities.Â
Westonbirt’s Equestrian Team provides opportunities for riders with their own horse/pony to represent the school in a wide range of competitions and events. From NSEA competitions through to British Dressage, British Showjumping and British Eventing pathways, pupils are encouraged to develop their competitive skills while enjoying the camaraderie and support of being part of a school team. Â
With dedicated coaching, competition preparation and expert guidance, our riders are supported to achieve their potential and develop confidence both in and out of the arena.Â
The season culminates with a team trip to the Hickstead Showground to compete in the NSEA National Championships, with riders eligible to attend the championships if they secure a placing in one of the local qualifying events. Highlights this year included a top ten finish for the 70cm showjumping team, an outstanding 5th place in the Dressage Championships, and a remarkable individual championship victory in the 80cm Eventers Challenge.
Through our Discover Riding programme, pupils from the Prep and Senior Schools can access regular riding lessons and equestrian experiences, whether they are complete beginners or looking to develop their existing skills. Â
Delivered in partnership with trusted local riding schools, the programme provides a structured progression route from introductory riding through to advanced performance pathways. Alongside riding lessons, pupils can also take part in stable management and horse care activities, developing practical skills and a deeper understanding of equestrian life. Â
For some pupils, these experiences will be the first steps towards competitive riding and the Equestrian Academy. For others, they provide an opportunity to enjoy the unique benefits of equestrian sport while developing confidence, responsibility, resilience and leadership skills. Â
Equestrian life at Westonbirt extends well beyond lessons and competitions. Throughout the year, pupils have opportunities to attend some of the sport’s most prestigious events and experiences, helping them deepen their knowledge and passion for equestrian sport. Â
From visits to major events such as the Badminton Horse Trials to specialist clinics, training days and behind-the-scenes experiences, pupils gain valuable exposure to the wider equestrian world while creating lasting memories with like-minded friends. Â
