Academies and Activities

Westonbirt’s outstanding facilities, extensive grounds and specialist teaching staff allow us to offer professional tuition in a wide range of high-quality Academy opportunities on 4 afternoons each week. Students receive up to 8 hours of coaching in their chosen Academies per week and are joined by UK student hosts, who will provide lots of opportunities for conversation and extending English-language skills

Academy Options

Students can choose one Academy each week from those listed below. (Not all Academies are available each week.)

Students who do not wish to specialise in 1 specific Academy each week can choose the Multi-Activity option where they will usually do 2 activities each afternoon – where possible they will be able to choose their favoured activities.

Students whose chosen academy does not run each afternoon (e.g. Horse Riding) will participate in the Multi-Activity programme on the other days.

Golf

Westonbirt’s very own 9-hole golf course is ideal for all young beginner or developing golfers.

What is involved: Daily lessons (4 x 2 hours) to master the basics of this popular sport, including developing their swing, using different clubs, driving, putting and getting out of bunkers.

At the end of the week, students will be given a handicap and take part in the Westonbirt Summer School Cup.

Smaller Horse riding

Horse Riding

The Cotswolds is famous horse-riding country, and home to the internationally-renowned Badminton and Gatcombe Horse Trials.

What is involved: This academy gives students the chance to develop their riding skills for 4 hours per week (2 x 2-hour sessions with guaranteed 1½ hours riding in each session).

Students will take lessons in the riding school, working on walking, trotting and cantering. In the second session students will enjoy a hack in the beautiful Gloucestershire countryside.

All abilities welcome. Additional charge: £120 a week

Polo

Incredible polo ponies to suit all abilities of riders, from complete beginners through to advanced. A chance to meet two of England’s top International polo players and learn all about the sport, it’s an opportunity not to be missed! Two x 2 hour sessions to be held at the prestigious Beaufort Polo Club. HPA qualified first class coaching using top-class facilities.

What is involved: From fine tuning techniques on wooden horses, learning to neck rein and stick and ball on polo ponies, the coaches will have students feeling comfortable under saddle, from stick and balling to playing slow chukkas in session 2.

Additional charges: £190 per week

Tennis

Expert coaching for players of all abilities in this hugely popular sport, using Westonbirt’s hard courts.

What is involved: Students will learn all aspects of the sport, from understanding the grip, forward and backhand strokes, serving, volleying, and court positioning.

At the end of the week, children will take part in the Westonbirt Summer School Open.

Cookery

Westonbirt School is a provider of highly regarded cookery courses, and our international students have access to our newly refurbished cookery room to enjoy a gastronomic Academy.

 What is involved: Students will learn a range of classic cooking techniques, creating a different dish each day, so that by the end of the week, they have the skills to create a three-course meal.

Performing Arts

Westonbirt School boasts vibrant and exciting Music and Drama departments. This Academy is a creative combination of music, drama and dance, leading to a performance at the end of the week, using the school’s performing arts facilities and expert tuition.

Football Academy

Our Football Academy provides our students with the opportunity to develop their skills.

What is involved: The Academy will focus on individual and team development, including ball manipulation and performance training, small sided games 2 v 2s and 3 v 3s, positional and transitional scenarios, patterns of play and tactical awareness. 5 v 5s and 11 v 11s. 

Training is delivered in two age groups, 10-12 years and 13-16 years.

Water Sports

Students take to the Cotswold Lakes to hone their skills for paddle boarding and kayaking.

What is involved: There are 2 sessions, each lasting 1 ½ hours. The first session is on stand-up paddle boards (SUPs.) The second session is kayaking. Each session will have an element of instruction with plenty of time for fun games on the lake.Kit will be provided. Sessions are planned and delivered by qualified instructors.

Archery

Multi-Activity Option

Those students not wishing to specialise can take part in this Multi-Activity opportunity, where they will have the chance to try a different activity every afternoon.

Students will take part in up to 2 activities per day from the list below. Where possible a choice will be given. Options mayinclude: Fencing, Basketball, Swimming, Archery, Survival skills, Football, Touch rugby, Badminton, Kwik cricket, Art/craft, Water polo, Softball/Rounders and Volleyball.
