The first year of formal school is arguably the most important of them all. It certainly has the longest impact. There are no important exams to take, no challenging maths theories to unravel, no opportunity to captain the school hockey team. And yet, this is the year that will set your child’s expectations for all the years to come. The three critical Reception terms will shape their understanding of what going to school means to them – a chore, or something they approach with excitement and positivity. It will shape their attitude to learning, and their belief in what is possible. It can light a fire of curiosity and enthusiasm inside them, and give them the determination to find out more – all critical to their ongoing learning.
Working in two small classes of around 12 children each, every child is nurtured and supported to find their own strengths and interests, and achieve their own potential. Learning in Reception is play-based, which means that the transition from nursery to school is smooth and reassuring. A high adult-to-child ratio gives us the time and space to tailor the education to your child, discovering how they learn, and giving them the very best start to their educational journey. Our enhanced Early Years curriculum is enriched by weekly specialist teaching in French, Music, PE, Games, Forest School and Swimming, ensuring children develop key skills of curiosity and independence, while also having lots of fun!
The Prep School’s parkland setting offers 200 acres of outdoor space for teachers to lead outdoor learning, ensuring children are connected with the environment around them, along with our very own Forest School. Hungry tummies and buzzing brains are powered by delicious home-cooked lunches, eaten in the dining hall alongside teachers and friends.
Working with parents is important to us – we welcome you to join us for workshops and information evenings, open classroom events, parents evenings, assemblies and the Christmas Nativity performance, and we have a wonderful transition programme for both parents and children entering our Reception classes. Parents throughout Westonbirt Prep have regular and easy access to communication with staff. You will see your child’s teacher at drop-off and pick-up every day, and will be given an email address for them, so you communicate directly at a time that suits you.
Flexible wrap-around care until 6pm each evening and holiday club provision throughout the school holidays make Westonbirt Prep a perfect choice for busy families.
Choosing the perfect school for your family is a really big decision. Come and visit us for an Open Day or a personalised visit on a normal working day, to feel the ‘Westonbirt Buzz’ and to find out more about what a Westonbirt Prep education would mean for your son or daughter.
