Welcome to our weekly update, where we celebrate the breadth of school life at Westonbirt. Each edition offers a snapshot of the learning, achievements and wider opportunities that define our community. We hope you enjoy reading this week’s highlights.
There was an authentic taste of Italy in the Food & Nutrition classroom this week as our Year 10 students rolled up their sleeves to make fresh pasta and a delicious ragu from scratch.
This hands-on lesson brought learning to life, challenging students to work collaboratively in pairs while developing their time management, organisation and cookery skills. Alongside mastering techniques such as dough making and knife skills, students explored the nutritional value of the ingredients they were using.
The lesson was a wonderful example of learning beyond the textbook, equipping students with practical skills and knowledge that will serve them well both in and beyond the classroom.
Our Key Stage 3 students are busy preparing for their upcoming Science Fair, where they will present the findings from their own independent scientific investigations.
Pupils are exploring a range of projects, including whether the colour of fizzy drinks influences flavour perception and what factors affect the melting of ice!
We can’t wait to see the finished projects and celebrate their discoveries at the Science Fair in the coming weeks!
Over the May Bank Holiday weekend, Westonbirt’s equestrian team travelled to Hickstead Showground to compete in the NSEA Eventers Challenge and Dressage Championships.
Competing against some of the country’s top school riders in challenging championship conditions, our students demonstrated exceptional skill, determination and teamwork throughout the weekend. Qualifying for these prestigious championships is an achievement in itself, making the riders’ performances and sportsmanship all the more impressive.
Highlights included a top ten finish for the 70cm team, an outstanding 5th place in the Dressage Championships for Sofia D, and a remarkable individual championship victory for Millie G in the 80cm Eventers Challenge.
Congratulations to all riders who represented Westonbirt so brilliantly, supporting one another throughout the competition and embodying the school’s values both in and out of the arena.
Congratulations to Lucy Watts, who made her debut for Wiltshire Women’s 1st XI this week.
Lucy enjoyed an impressive first appearance, taking a wicket, claiming a catch and contributing to a run out. The match was also live-streamed on YouTube!
We look forward to following her continued success on the cricket field!
Congratulations to Bluebell E and Will M, whose original songs have been selected among the top 30 entries in the 2026 Young Songwriter Competition.
The competition attracted almost 1,000 submissions from young musicians across the UK, with entries judged by an esteemed panel that included singer-songwriter Tom Odell.
Bluebell’s song, Taste of Blue, and Will’s song, Playing Pretend, were both recognised for their creativity, originality and songwriting talent. This is a remarkable achievement, and we are incredibly proud of their success.
Congratulations to Gonzalo E, who has qualified for the National Golf Championships, taking place at La Serena Golf Club in Murcia, Spain, from 26 to 28 June.
Hosted by the Real Federación Española de Golf (RFEG), the championship will bring together the country’s top young golfers to compete for the national title, making Gonzalo’s qualification a significant achievement.
Paul Williams, Head of Golf, said: “We are extremely proud of Gonzalo’s progression and success, and we wish him all the very best for the tournament.”
Good luck, Gonzalo!
