The Westonbirt Prep advantage

At Westonbirt Prep, a lively and ambitious curriculum, a talented and ambitious team of staff, and senior-quality facilities in the glorious Gloucestershire countryside combine to create the perfect conditions for learning. This magical formula gives our children an advantage in developing and achieving their potential.

A curriculum to engage and challenge

Our experiential, hands-on curriculum immerses children in their education, grabbing their interest and holding their attention. A high staff-to-child ratio ensures children are expertly guided through their learning journey, supported where they need a leg up and stretched where their abilities show promise, to be the best they possibly can be. The result is a school full of students who are excited and enthused, a happy community of children who are motivated and excited to learn.

Highly qualified and enthusiastic teachers

And our staff? They are talented and enthusiastic, ambitious for our children, and keen to share a fascination for their subjects. Many teachers are senior-level subject specialists, and we have qualified teachers among our teaching assistants too, significantly elevating the quality of provision. They are here to guide, not control, to unlock the potential in every child, helping them focus their energies, encouraging exploration and discovery and developing their skills as lifelong learners. They allow children to make mistakes and face challenges, readying them for the road ahead.

Outstanding facilities in a breathtaking setting

The third part of the puzzle is the beautiful Cotswold setting, and amazing facilities. Our 221-acre classroom stretches around us, a constant source of inspiration for learning and creativity. Within it are found specialist, senior-quality spaces for STEM, Art, Technology, Music, Swimming, PE & Games, and our pupils are able to make use of facilities that would normally be reserved for senior-age children.

Making a strong start – Pre-Prep (4-7 years)

The heart of our Pre-Prep department is active engagement, curiosity and creativity.

  • The curriculum here is topic based, immersing children in varied and exciting themes that pull in opportunities to learn from across all subjects. So in studying the Great Fire of London, they will get a first-hand account from their teacher role-playing Samuel Pepys, write their own diary entries and explore the physics of how fire spreads.
  • While our approach is creative, we don’t lose focus on reading, writing and mathematics, the critical building blocks that power learning across the curriculum.
  • Making the most of our subject expert teachers, all Pre-Prep children have specialist lessons in French, Music and Drama.
  • It’s not just their brains that are being exercised. Every child has Swimming, PE and Games lessons each week, building strength and co-ordination, and developing teamwork and leadership skills.
  • Weekly Forest School lessons connect children with the natural world, and take full advantage of the glorious grounds that surround our school.
  • In fact across the curriculum, we pack as much outdoor learning as we can into our 210 acres of countryside.

Forging ahead – Prep (age 7-11 years)

Whether it’s languages, literature or lego robotics, Year 3 is where learning really becomes turbo powered. We have grasped their attention, and now is the time they will inhale all the learning we can deliver.

  • The curriculum is broad and balanced, giving every child the chance to discover and excel in their area of interest
  • Maths and English remain a daily focus, building in complexity and embedding skills that will last a lifetime.
  • Specialist lessons expand, taking in Music, Drama, French, Science, Computer Science, STEM, Swimming, PE, Games, Humanities
  • We start preparing children for the Senior curriculum, moving children into specialist spaces for different subjects, increasing the number of subject expert teachers, tailoring the maths level to each child from Year 3, and building the independent learning skills that will be critical futher down the line

Personalised Learning Pathways

Personalised Learning Pathways (PLP) really sets Westonbirt Prep apart from its competitors, giving pupils a truly individualised curriculum. This bespoke programme delivers daily sessions tailored to every child from Year 3-Year 6. They allow us to support children where they need extra time, enrich their learning with new experiences and challenge them to stretch themselves in subjects where they excel. It includes subjects as broad as Maths, Italian, Latin, Music and History’s Mysteries, and fuels the children’s enthusiasm for learning.
