Westonbirt Nursery - Our Nursery Rooms

Our Nursery Classrooms

Our nursery is split across four classrooms, each for different age groups. Teaching and activities in each room are age appropriate for the different stages of development of young children.

We have designated transition dates for new children and those progressing between rooms. If your child’s birthday falls between transition dates, they will remain in their current room until the next transition date. In the Robins room, our ‘Rising Threes’ have the opportunity to transition the term before their birthday. The weeks leading up to this date will provide the opportunity for transition visits where children will join their new classmates for activities such as circle times, adult-led activities, Forest School and mealtimes.

Staff liaise between all of our rooms to share important information about each child, and will also arrange to speak with parents to answer any questions that you may have. During the summer term, children have multiple opportunities to visit their new room as a cohort, get to know their new teachers and meet their new classmates.

Little Owls

Home to our 2-year-olds

For many of our children, this is their first experience outside the comfort of family and friends. Little Owls class is a warm, welcoming environment to make this transition as positive as possible. The classroom is designed especially for our youngest learners – a nurturing, home-from-home space where play is at the heart of learning. Children are encouraged to explore the world around them, inspiring curiosity and a sense of awe and wonder. We gently support the development of independence and early self-help skills, while also fostering important social abilities like sharing and taking turns. Our goal is to nurture resilient, creative, and independent learners from the very start.

Wrens

Home to our ‘Rising 3s’

Our Wrens class welcomes our ‘Rising 3s’ – children who will turn 3 during the second half of the academic year. This is a key stage in their development, setting the foundation for lifelong learning, physical growth, and emotional wellbeing. The Wrens classroom is a lively and creative space where children are encouraged to explore through a rich mix of activities and free-flow play, helping to spark curiosity and nurture a genuine love for learning.

For the 2025-26 academic year, children who turn 3 between September and December will be in Robins. Children who turn 3 between January and August will be in Wrens. In September 2026, both classes will move up to Peacocks together.

Robins

Home to our 3-year-olds who will be graduating to Pre-School at the beginning of the next academic year

When children turn 3, they transition into our Robins class – an exciting next step that opens up new experiences. Learning is brought to life through hands-on, real-world activities like imaginative role play, music, swimming and Forest School adventures. Outdoor play is an important part of the day, giving children the freedom to explore, play games, and enjoy active time in the fresh air. We also create a supportive space where children can explore their emotions and begin to understand how they are feeling in a gentle, nurturing way.

Peacocks

Home to our Pre-School aged children, 3 to 4-year-olds

Peacocks is our Pre-School class, where play remains central, but with added structure to gently prepare children for the transition to school. Our vibrant learning environment encourages exploration and discovery through sensory activities, interactive play, and hands-on experiences that deepen children’s understanding of the world around them. This stage is crucial for cognitive, physical, and emotional development, and our experienced Early Years staff provide carefully planned experiences to support each child’s growth. Creativity and imagination flourish in both our indoor and outdoor spaces, with opportunities for storytelling, role play, and art. A consistent daily routine helps children feel secure and builds a sense of responsibility and independence.
