Welcome to our weekly update, where we celebrate the breadth of school life at Westonbirt. Each edition offers a snapshot of the learning, achievements and wider opportunities that define our community. We hope you enjoy reading this week’s highlights.
Year 7 have been exploring mixtures in Science and discovering the different techniques used to separate them. So far, pupils have learnt about filtration, evaporation and distillation, before turning their attention to chromatography in this week’s lesson.
Chromatography is a technique used to separate substances and identify what different mixtures contain. It plays an important role in real-world science laboratories and can be used in areas such as vaccine development, food and drink testing, drug analysis, and even forensic investigations at crime scenes.
Through hands-on practical work, pupils investigated how different inks separate into individual colours, helping to bring the science behind this fascinating process to life.
Our equestrian co-curricular club welcomes riders of all abilities, whether you are just starting out or an experienced rider. Lunchtime and after-school sessions give pupils the opportunity to develop their riding, dressage and jumping skills in a structured and supportive environment.
It’s a brilliant way to build confidence in the saddle, refine technique, and enjoy time with friends as part of a close-knit community.
Our equestrian team is also going from strength to strength, with some impressive recent competition results – please see SOCS for further details.
We are delighted to share the fantastic results from the most recent LAMDA examinations, which took place in March. All 15 Westonbirt pupils entered achieved Distinction standard, with marks ranging from 84% to 90% – an exceptional accomplishment and a reflection of their hard work.
A special congratulations goes to the pupils who completed their prestigious Grade 8 Gold Medal examinations:
Darcey O (Year 9) had an outstanding weekend at the South West Regional Swimming Championships, competing in the 15-year-old age group across three days.
She took part in multiple events, achieving several personal bests and qualifying for four finals. Her results included:
A fantastic set of performances and a brilliant achievement on the regional stage – well done, Darcey!
Congratulations to Polly J and Natalie L in Year 7, who have achieved fantastic success in the National Youth Monologues 2026 competition.
Recordings of their Shakespeare monologues, prepared during LAMDA lessons, were submitted to this nationwide competition and judged alongside entries from thousands of young performers across the UK.
Polly’s Classical monologue was awarded Commended by the judges, while Natalie’s Classical monologue was selected as a Finalist, earning her an invitation to perform in London!
Following an exceptional year which saw nearly 4,000 young actors enter the competition, this recognition is a wonderful reflection of the standard shown in their performances. Well done to both pupils on this outstanding achievement
We are delighted to celebrate the success of our Head of Music, Mr Jones, whose male choir, the City of Bath Male Choir, achieved outstanding success at the Cornwall International Male Choral Festival (CIMCF) last weekend. It is always inspiring to see our teachers excelling in their fields beyond the classroom, bringing such expertise and passion back into school life.
Competing against choirs from across the UK and beyond, the choir won its category before also being named Champion Choir and Best UK Male Choir – an extraordinary accomplishment at the UK’s only competition dedicated entirely to male choirs. Even more impressively, the choir is the first ever to win the competition on its debut appearance!
It’s been another action-packed week in sport at Westonbirt, with fixtures across a range of teams. You can view the full set of fixtures and results here..
Our boarders have been making the most of the longer evenings with twilight cricket matches, outdoor BBQs and campfire s’mores.
They’ve also enjoyed trips to the cinema and friendly house dart matches, while our Sedgewick crew even took over the kitchens to make their own homemade pizzas
We always love to hear about achievements and moments of teamwork or collaboration. If you would like to share something, please email marketing@westonbirtschool.uk.
