A Westonbirt Prep education shapes attitude to learning, and children’s belief in what is possible. It lights a fire of curiosity and enthusiasm inside them, and gives them the determination to find out more. Immersed in a culture that promotes a love of learning, children are encouraged to be curious, creative and courageous; their childhood is nurtured and protected, whilst they are also prepared for the rapidly-changing world around them. Set within 210 acres of parkland grounds, pupils benefit from an abundance of outdoor space for sport, play and learning as well as the specialist teaching and facilities of a much larger school.
With an individualised provision that caters for a diverse range of characters, interests and skills, academic achievement is high and pupils move on from Year 6 to Westonbirt School and other top independent and grammar schools.
Working in two small classes of around 10-12 children each, every child is nurtured and supported to find their own strengths and interests, and achieve their own potential. Learning in Reception is play-based, which means that the transition from nursery to school is smooth and reassuring. A high adult-to-child ratio gives us the time and space to tailor the education to your child, discovering how they learn, and giving them the very best start to their educational journey. Our enhanced Early Years curriculum is enriched by weekly specialist teaching in French, Music, PE, Games, Forest School and Swimming, ensuring children develop key skills of curiosity and independence, while also having lots of fun!
As children progress through the school, our specialist-delivered provision increases to cover science, computing, art, product design and games. Drama and music focus on inspiring the children, giving them the chance to enjoy and express themselves with confidence, learning theory, new skills, styles and techniques with the opportunity to display these every year in a public performance. In Sport, children are encouraged to be competitive, determined and to give their all but at the same time to be evaluative of their performance, supportive of others, fair and most of all, to enjoy sport. Where children show a particular aptitude, we will encourage and assist in their development and support them with their journey.
As our Year 6 pupils look forward to senior school, we offer leadership opportunities and the chance to gain more independence and maturity ahead of the transition, through boarding options in our Junior Boarding house.
The vast amount of space and natural beauty at Westonbirt is fully utilised to benefit children’s learning. The Prep School’s parkland setting offers 200 acres of outdoor space for teachers to lead outdoor learning, ensuring children are connected with the environment around them,. Whether it is dressing as ancient Greeks in the Italian Gardens, conducting science investigations in the meadow, cooking in the spinney during Forest School, competing on the sports pitches or climbing and jumping in the play areas, outdoor activity plays a huge role in our school day.
Hungry tummies and buzzing brains are powered by delicious home-cooked lunches, eaten in the dining hall alongside teachers and friends.
Choosing the perfect school for your family is a really big decision. Our Open Week will be informative yet informal. You will be welcomed over coffee by our Headmistress, Mrs Rebecca Mitchell, see the school in action with an individual tour, have the chance to ask our pupils plenty of questions, and enjoy the opportunity to speak with key members of staff.
We look forward to welcoming you to our event, where you will receive the warmest of welcomes!
