Theatre Royalty Attends Westonbirt’s Opening Night
27th June 2025
Westonbirt School’s senior production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat was an unforgettable evening, celebrated not only for the outstanding performances but also for a very special guest in the audience – the legendary composer Andrew Lloyd Webber himself.
The students were amazed when Lord Lloyd Webber arrived to watch the opening night of the show he wrote when he was just 18 years old. His presence added an extra layer of excitement and magic to an already vibrant performance.
Headmistress Natasha Dangerfield shared: ‘’Absolutely delighted and very proud to have had such a special guest to watch Joseph last night. It brough the words from the show ‘if you think it, want it, dream it…then it’s real’ become the reality for our young cast. Under an additional pressure with such an auspicious member of the audience, our young cast shone and were hugely honoured to hear from Andrew Lloyd-Webber personally, at the end of the performance. Westonbirt at its best and not without the huge support of our staff, friends and families who were also there on the night – what an end to our term!’’
After the show, Lord Lloyd Webber spent time with the cast and crew, praising their colourful and accomplished performance. He shared insights into the musical’s origins – which began as a twenty minute school show before being expanded into the production known today. He also acknowledged the challenge of the score, originally written for boys, telling the students: “You should feel very proud – it is not an easy sing for girls.”
The cast and production team were thrilled by the visit and reflected on the significance of performing for such an iconic figure in musical theatre.
Sienna Galer said: “It felt like such a privilege to perform in front of Andrew Lloyd Webber last night. So much effort and passion went into the show from everyone involved, and having him there watching made the whole experience feel incredibly special.”
Bluebell Evans added: “Meeting Andrew Lloyd Webber and performing for him was truly incredible. His passion and love for theatre inspired me deeply and has given me even more determination to keep improving and pursuing my dream. He really is a legend.”
Poppy Christie said: “It was surreal to meet him, especially knowing how many amazing musicals he has created. Performing as Joseph after so many months of rehearsing was an honour. The entire cast worked so well together, and we all came together to put on a fantastic show.”
Alexandra Suarez-Yard, who played Mrs Potiphar, said: “I was genuinely shocked when I found out Andrew Lloyd Webber would be attending our opening night. He is an extraordinary man with numerous awards, including three Emmys and six Tonys. He stayed after the show to speak with the whole cast and crew. I was amazed by how much dedication he and Tim Rice invested in the musical, especially as it started as a short school show. He is a true theatre icon and we are all very grateful for this once in a lifetime opportunity.”
This special evening not only showcased the incredible talent and dedication of Westonbirt’s students but also created lasting memories and inspiration for everyone involved. The school looks forward to many more performances where students can dream big and bring their passions to life.
