Subject Options

French

What are the aims of the course?

A Level French fosters articulate, culturally aware students who can communicate with confidence and insight. The course develops fluency in speaking and builds the ability to express ideas and opinions on current social and political issues. Students learn advanced vocabulary, grammatical accuracy, and the skills required to analyse spoken and written texts. Great emphasis is also given to debating ideas and to independent research, building transferable skills valued in higher education and international careers - ideal for ambitious, globally-minded students.

Are there any specific entry requirements?

To fully participate in the course we recommend students achieve a minimum Grade 6 in GCSE French.

Spanish

What are the aims of the course?

A Level Spanish offers students the chance to become confident and articulate speakers of one of the world’s most widely spoken languages. The course develops fluency, accuracy, and the ability to understand and discuss complex social, political, and cultural topics. By analysing original texts and expressing informed and nuanced opinions on topical issues, students grow in cultural awareness and analytical thinking. Research, debating, and extended writing are all key elements, laying the foundation for future academic study and global careers.

Are there any specific entry requirements?

We recommend a Grade 6 or above in GCSE Spanish to fully access the A Level course.

Religious Studies, Philosophy and Ethics

What are the aims of the course?

This thought-provoking course challenges students to explore life’s biggest questions: Does God exist? What is truth? How should we live? Students develop analytical and evaluative skills, confidence in debating complex ideas, and the ability to think independently and write persuasively. With passionate, expert teachers and excellent resources, students gain a deeper understanding of philosophy, ethics, and theology. Alongside deep subject knowledge, students also build valuable skills for university and beyond: critical thinking, essay writing, argument analysis, and independent learning – all in a supportive, inspiring environment.

Are there any specific entry requirements?

We recommend a Grade 6 or above in GCSE religious studies (or English if RS was not studied). However, more importantly, we are looking for students with curiosity, enthusiasm, and a genuine interest in big ideas and ethical challenges. Motivation and a willingness to think deeply are key.

Psychology

What are the aims of the course?

A Level psychology empowers students to explain behaviour through evidence, not opinion. Learn how memory works, why people conform, how the brain drives behaviour, and how mental health is understood and treated. Master research design, data analysis and evaluation, crafting clear, balanced arguments with strong written communication. The course builds ethical awareness, cultural sensitivity and scientific literacy so you can question claims, make informed decisions and apply psychological thinking to everyday life, further study and future careers.

Are there any specific entry requirements?

We recommend students achieve a Grade 6 in GCSE English language and mathematics; a Grade 5 in biology or combined science is also strongly recommended. A solid work ethic, regular reading and clear written expression are essential.

Physics

What are the aims of the course?

Building on (I)GCSE physics or GCSE combined science/IGCSE double award, A Level physics explores the nature, behaviour, and mathematics of the universe, from the subatomic to the cosmic, while studying the work of some of history’s greatest minds, including Einstein, Newton, Curie, and Bell. Students develop key skills in problem solving, reasoning, numeracy, ICT, and communication, while also examining the real-world applications and implications of physics. The subject complements many others, including mathematics, chemistry, biology, economics, technology/product design, computer science, and geography, and opens the door to a wide range of further study and career opportunities.

Are there any specific entry requirements?

Students will need to have achieved a Grade 6, or above, in (I)GCSE Physics, or GCSE combined science/IGCSE double award, as well as a Grade 6+ in (I)GCSE mathematics, in order to access the A Level physics course.

Music

What are the aims of the course?

A Level music develops students’ skills and understanding in performing, composing, and appraising music, building upon their existing skills and introducing new techniques. The course encourages active engagement with music, developing confidence in performance and composition, and expands musical knowledge across a variety of styles and genres. Students will learn to analyse music from well-known composers, developing their analytical and appraising skills throughout the course.

Are there any specific entry requirements?

It is expected that students wishing to study A Level music have passed Grade 5 in at least one instrument or voice and have taken GCSE music.

Mathematics

What are the aims of the course?

The aim of A Level mathematics is to develop students’ understanding of mathematical concepts, methods, and techniques, while enhancing their problem-solving and analytical skills. It encourages logical reasoning, precision, and the ability to construct and communicate rigorous mathematical arguments. The course builds fluency in core topics such as algebra, calculus, and trigonometry, and applies mathematics to real-world contexts through statistics and mechanics. It prepares students for higher education, particularly in STEM fields, and supports a wide range of careers. Overall, it fosters confidence, curiosity, and appreciation for the role of mathematics in both academic and everyday life.

Are there any specific entry requirements?

To study A Level mathematics students need to achieve a minimum of a Grade 7 at GCSE.

Leiths School of Food and Wine

What are the aims of the course?

A bespoke Leith's cooking course, the curriculum and lessons are designed to build practical skills and confidence in planning, preparing and cooking a wide range of menus. Successful completion will enable students to join the Leiths list; an exclusive list of Leiths accepted and qualified individuals providing access to a variety of catering & hospitality jobs worldwide.

Are there any specific entry requirements?

There are no specific entry requirements although basic cookery skills are an advantage.

Latin

What are the aims of the course?

Studying Latin at A Level is a chance to understand the Roman language and literary culture in great depth, expanding upon learnings at GCSE. The course aims to develop translation skills and in particular literary analysis; examining authorial intent and rhetorical or poetic skill. There is even the chance to try Latin composition! Beyond Latin, students learn invaluable transferable skills such as extrapolating and conveying abstract material, attention to detail and critical thinking.

Are there any specific entry requirements?

You will need a Grade 7 or higher in GCSE Latin to study the subject at A Level.

History

What are the aims of the course?

The A Level history course aims to deepen understanding of key historical periods and develop critical analytical skills. Explore political, social, and economic developments across time in all three examined units. Students will learn how to evaluate sources for reliability, provenance, and context. The course also strengthens the ability to assess and construct historical interpretations using evidence and argument. The course will develop skills in critical thinking, independent research, extended writing, and forming substantiated judgments. These skills are essential for higher education and careers requiring analysis, communication, and decision-making; and encourages a thoughtful, questioning approach to the past and present.

Are there any specific entry requirements?

Students will need a Grade 6 at GCSE history (or English if they haven’t studied GCSE history) to study history at A Level.

Geography

What are the aims of the course?

Geography helps students understand how our world works, physically, socially, economically, and politically. The course explores key global issues such as climate change, urbanisation, resource use, and inequality, while also examining how these impact people and places at a local level. Students will consider processes and patterns over space and time, developing an understanding
of how places change. Along the way, students build valuable skills in analysis, evaluation, decision-making, data interpretation, and extended writing, essential for university and beyond.

Are there any specific entry requirements?

Students must have a Grade 6 or above in GCSE geography. It is also advised to have at least a Grade 6 in both maths and English, as the course involves data interpretation, extended writing, and critical analysis.

Further Mathematics

What are the aims of the course?

Further A Level mathematics aims to deepen and broaden students’ mathematical knowledge beyond the standard A Level course. It covers advanced topics such as complex numbers, matrices, differential equations, and further calculus, encouraging the development of problem-solving, logical reasoning, and abstract thinking skills. The course promotes exploration of sophisticated mathematical ideas and techniques, helping students gain a stronger understanding of both theoretical and applied mathematics. It also fosters an appreciation for the elegance and power of mathematics, building confidence and independence in handling complex problems and real-world applications across various mathematical fields.

Are there any specific entry requirements?

To study A Level further mathematics students need to achieve a minimum of a Grade 8 at GCSE.

Agriculture

What are the aims of the course?

The agricultural sector is arguably the most important in the world; no farmers, no food, no future. Students who study this course will gain an insight into this global industry and will be equipped with skills that will set them above their peers. Students may indeed wish to go on to study an Agriculture BSc and other related degrees, but this course also complements the subjects of those who wish to study veterinary medicine, biosciences, business management and engineering degrees to name a few.

Entry Requirements

You will need a minimum Grade 4 in GCSE mathematics and English to undertake the course.

Extended Certificate in Sport

What are the aims of the course?

The BTEC Extended Certificate course is aimed at students who have a passion for sport and are looking to follow careers such as sports performance, physiotherapy, teaching, or coaching. It is a two-year course and is the equivalent to one A Level. For students who are considering a sports related degree, the BTEC Extended Certificate combines well with subjects such as biology and psychology.

Are there any specific entry requirements?

We recommend a Grade 6 or above in GCSE physical education (or biology/combined science if PE was not studied). A passion for learning about sport is important.

English Literature

What are the aims of the course?

English Literature A Level will transport students through the ages, and across the world, to hear voices that grapple with the very concept of what it means to be human in complex societies and at pivotal moments in time. This course will develop analytical, critical and literacy skills that are highly flexible and transferrable. Students are encouraged to develop a personal relationship with texts and form their own critical opinions. Fundamentally, English Literature allows students to challenge conceptions about society and humanity and it enables them to explore the fascinating relationship between art, in the wider sense, and reality itself.

Are there any specific entry requirements?

To fully participate in the course a Grade 6 GCSE English Literature and a Grade 5 in English Language is recommended.

Economics

What are the aims of the course?

A Level economics aims to equip young people with the ability to think critically, analyse complex information, and make well-reasoned decisions. The course encourages logical thinking, effective communication, and the interpretation of data to build and evaluate arguments. Students develop problem-solving skills, an awareness of different perspectives, and the confidence to engage with real-world issues. These transferable skills prepare them for further study, active citizenship, and a wide range of future careers.

Are there any specific entry requirements?

We recommend a Grade 5 or above in both Maths and English.

Drama & Theatre

What are the aims of the course?

A Level drama and theatre invites students to immerse themselves in play texts while developing practical skills as an actor, designer, or director. A commitment to live theatre is at the heart of the course, enriching studies and sparking what may become a lifelong passion for theatre-going. Blending creative practice with theoretical exploration, this challenging yet deeply rewarding subject offers an unforgettable two-year journey into the world of performance.

Are there any specific entry requirements?

A Grade 7 or better in English GCSEs is a good foundation for A Level drama and theatre: students will have studied drama texts from a literary perspective and have developed essay writing skills. Opportunities for theatre and costume design in the practical component of the course could be a real plus for students who have done well in art at GCSE.

Classical Civilisation

What are the aims of the course?

Classical civilisation is a brilliant and broad humanities course that teaches literature, art history and philosophy through the lens of the classical world of Ancient Greece and Rome. As an essay subject, students learn how to craft detailed and compelling arguments, and the content that students study is deeply connected to our modern world. Students finish the course with an intricate knowledge of ancient culture, but also with excellent transferable skills such as communication, complex analysis and critical thinking.

Are there any specific entry requirements?

Students should have a Grade 6 in English Literature or from another GCSE humanities subject.

Chemistry

What are the aims of the course?

Students will learn to solve complex problems, using knowledge of the structure of the atom and, based on this, how atoms and matter interact with each other and the physical environment around us. Students will learn to recognise patterns in data and make informed predictions about a range of chemical and physical properties and the reactions of different materials.

Are there any specific entry requirements?

Students will need to achieve a minimum of a Grade 6 at GCSE/ iGCSE chemistry, or 66 double award science, as well as a Grade 6 in maths to study chemistry at A Level.

 

Business Studies

What are the aims of the course?

In this course students develop the knowledge, skills, and confidence to thrive in the dynamic world of business. It inspires learners to understand how businesses operate, from marketing and finance to management and strategy. Through practical and engaging content, the course nurtures entrepreneurial thinking, decision-making abilities, and problem-solving skills. It empowers students to explore real-world business challenges, develop innovative ideas, and become future leaders and change-makers. With a strong foundation in core business principles, learners are prepared not just for further education or employment - but to make their mark in the business world.

Biology

What are the aims of the course?

Studying A Level biology offers a strong foundation for a wide range of careers and further education, particularly in STEM and healthcare fields. It fosters a deeper understanding of the living world and its complexities, sparking interests in scientific enquiry. It also develops valuable analytical, problem-solving, and practical skills that are applicable to diverse areas beyond biology and are highly complementary to other chosen subjects.

At GCSE pupils require a Grade 6 in biology and a minimum of Grade 5 in chemistry and mathematics to study at A Level.

Art & Design: Photography

What are the aims of the course?

A Level photography provides an opportunity to learn and develop a range of skills in relation to lens based media, techniques and processes, through both traditional and new technologies. The course aims to develop strong independent points of view and a mature grasp of the range of critical debate surrounding contemporary art and its many international histories. You will be equipped to become a motivated and resourceful learner with a good sense of how to organise your time. There is plenty of opportunity for imaginative and creative expression, using a range of media.

Are there any specific entry requirements?

Alongside the minimum entry requirements to Westonbirt Sixth Form photography you will need a passion for being creative.

Art & Design: Fine Art

What are the aims of the course?

The fine art course at A Level provides students with the opportunity to learn and develop a range of skills in relation to drawing, painting, sculpture and mixed media. The course aims to develop strong independent points of view and a mature grasp of the range of critical debate surrounding contemporary art and its many international histories. The course will equip students to become motivated and resourceful learners with a good sense of how to organise their time. The fine art programme provides students with the opportunity to express themselves imaginatively and creatively using a range of media. It is a demanding course but very enjoyable and rewarding.

To fully participate in the course, we recommend a minimum Grade 6 at GCSE to study the A Level course.

Art & Design: 3D Design

What are the aims of the course?

A Level 3D design is ideal for students interested in pursuing a future in architecture, furniture design, interior design, theatre or set design, and fashion. The course aims to develop your ability to communicate design ideas through research, ideation, prototyping, iterative development, and the manufacture of final outcomes. Ignite a passion for design while developing a wide
range of skills, including:

• Research and inquiry
• Critical thinking and analysis
• Evaluation and reflective learning
• Drawing by hand and using CAD software
• Prototyping and iterative design

Prototyping is a core element of the course, through repeated iterations, students will refine their skills and learn to manufacture high-quality, well-resolved products.

Are there any specific entry requirements?

To fully participate in the course, we recommend a minimum of Grade 5 in design technology or art at GCSE.

Entry Requirements

We want every student to thrive and succeed in their chosen courses. We ask applicants to meet the following academic standards:

  • Minimum of four GCSEs at grade 5, or five GCSEs at grade 4 (or overseas equivalents)
  • Grade 6 in your chosen A Level subject if previously taken at GCSE
  • Grade 8 in GCSE Mathematics to take Further Mathematics at A Level
  • Grade 4+ in English Language and Maths (resits required if not achieved)

Extended Project Qualification  

The Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) is a Level 3 qualification allowing students to independently explore a subject they’re passionate about through research and critical thinking. Students produce either a 5,000-word essay or creative artefact with a shorter report, concluding with a presentation that builds public speaking confidence.

Worth up to 28 UCAS points, the EPQ demonstrates initiative, curiosity and independent thinking – qualities that distinguish applicants in competitive university admissions. Students receive dedicated supervision and structured guidance throughout.

St John’s Essay

The St John’s Essay is a long-standing and prestigious tradition, originating during World War II when St John’s College, Oxford, entrusted its artworks to Westonbirt for safekeeping. In gratitude, St John’s established an annual prize to recognise the most interesting and stimulating Sixth Form essay on any subject. This is a wonderful opportunity to flex your intellectual curiosity – choose a subject you care about, research it thoughtfully, and write with passion. The St John’s Essay offers more than a prize; it’s a celebration of curiosity and a milestone in your academic journey at Westonbirt.
