An Evening of Insight with Jonathan Charles
21st November 2025
Westonbirt students and the public were given an evening of insight into encounters with some of the world’s most influential leaders as we welcomed Jonathan Charles, former BBC foreign correspondent and presenter, and later Managing Director of Communications at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. Now a geopolitical insight and strategic communications advisor, Jonathan brought a wealth of experience from a career shaped by global events and meeting major political figures.
Over the course of his career, Jonathan has reported from 29 wars and conflicts and spoke candidly about the realities of covering major international crises and meeting leaders including Margaret Thatcher, Tony Blair, Donald Trump and President Xi Jinping. Through these experiences, he explored the central theme of the evening: why leadership matters.
Jonathan discussed lessons from both peace and conflict, drawing out the qualities that define effective leadership. He emphasised the importance of having a clear vision, the need to be strong yet pragmatic, the immense value of communication skills, and the role a sense of humour can play in even the most challenging situations.
He also shared a little about the beginnings of his own journey into journalism. As a child, he would watch the news with his family, captivated by the work of BBC foreign correspondents. One idea stayed with him: “Journalists are writing the first draft of history. What you’re saying to the audience is, this is how I’m seeing it right now, and that seemed to me a really fascinating thing to do.” A reminder of the responsibility that underpins journalism.
The evening was introduced and brought to a close by our Senior Prefect Tanem and Deputy Head Boy Thomas, who framed the conversation with thoughtful reflections. It was a memorable evening that offered deep insight into leadership, storytelling and global affairs. Our sincere thanks go to Jonathan Charles for sharing his experience and wisdom with such openness.
