Celebrated actor Hugh Bonneville visits Westonbirt Prep to read his new children’s book
13th October 2025
Celebrated actor Hugh Bonneville returned to Westonbirt School this morning for a special assembly at Westonbirt Prep School, delighting pupils with an inspiring visit.
Hugh, star of the Paddington film series and award-winning TV show Downton Abbey, delivered an entertaining and insightful assembly, including reading extracts from his new children’s book Rory Sparkes and the Elephant in the Room.
Hugh’s sister, Claire, is a former Westonbirt pupil and he told stories of his previous visits to the school with his family as a child, alongside behind-the-scenes tales of filming Paddington and his inspiration for writing his new book.
Hugh was joined by author Jo Nadin best known for Joe All Alone, which is now also CBBC TV show, and the Rachel Riley book series. Alongside answering the children’s eager questions, the two authors also took part in a book signing event.
Hugh Bonneville said: “Having not been to Westonbirt for about 40 years when my sister was a pupil here, it was a real delight to come back. A lot has changed in that time, and the new development works currently taking place at Westonbirt Prep School look absolutely amazing. The pupils were all an absolute delight, and what a stunning environment in which to learn.”
Rebecca Mitchell, Westonbirt Prep Headmistress, said: “We were absolutely thrilled to have Hugh Bonneville and Jo Nadin visit us today. A passion for reading is thriving across Westonbirt Prep and visits like this are a reminder of the true magic of storytelling.”
Hugh and Jo’s visit falls during an exciting period for Westonbirt Prep as the school prepares to open two new buildings in January 2026. New state-of-the-art facilities will include six bright and spacious classrooms, a new school hall and kitchen, modern play equipment, and a welcoming new entrance.
Designed to enhance the learning experience and foster a sense of community, the buildings will be centred around a beautiful courtyard, surrounded by Grade 1 parkland and historic trees.
This redevelopment project is the latest in a series of recent investment and renovation across Westonbirt Prep. Earlier this year, an extensive refurbishment of the nursery was completed, creating a modern and immersive learning environment for the school’s youngest pupils.
