How specialist teaching helps to nurture children’s potential at Westonbirt Prep

At Westonbirt Prep, we believe that every child carries a spark of potential, and with the right guidance, that spark can become a lifelong passion. One of the most powerful ways we nurture this is through specialist teaching.
From the earliest years, our pupils are inspired by teachers who don’t just know their subjects inside and out, but who truly love sharing them.
This passion is infectious. When a science teacher demonstrates the magic of a simple experiment, children’s eyes light up with curiosity. When a music teacher strikes the first note, pupils lean in, eager to join the rhythm. When an art teacher encourages a child to put brush to canvas, they discover not just colour and form, but their own voice. These are moments that last far beyond the classroom – they are the beginnings of confidence, creativity, and joy in learning.
Specialist teaching also gives children something even more profound: the chance to be seen and valued as individuals. A sports teacher who recognises quiet determination, a drama teacher who spots natural confidence, or a languages specialist who encourages a child to find their voice – all play a role in shaping young lives. These teachers don’t just pass on knowledge; they unlock potential.
At Westonbirt Prep, specialist teaching begins as part of our curriculum as early as our nursery, with our pre-school and pre-prep children having specialist lessons in Forest School, French, Games, Music and Swimming. For our prep children, this is expanded to also include Art, Computing, Drama, English, Maths and Science.
Our families quickly see the difference this makes to their children, who come home excited to share what they’ve discovered, proud of what they’ve achieved, and eager for what comes next. Parents can be confident that their child is not only learning well but also growing in resilience, independence, and self-belief.
For us, specialist teaching is about more than lessons – it’s about inspiring children to shine in their own way, every single day.
