During the Second World War, Westonbirt School took possession of a number of priceless works of art for safekeeping from St. John’s College, Oxford. In gratitude, St. John's set up a prize to be awarded to Sixth Formers, each year, for the most interesting and stimulating essay on a subject of their choice. Westonbirt still continues this tradition today. There is one major prize winner, who will receive a cheque for £100 and a £50 prize for an essay written by a student with English as their second language.
This year's winners are:
Overall winner: Eowyn H - a superb reflection on the way a writer approaches a completely open topic, and how art and creativity is often enhanced by having constraints imposed on the process.
Runner-up: Felicity H- a personal exploration of the fine art of talking to oneself and the inner world of the imagination.
Winner of International Students: Sarah L - a mature appraisal of the importance of ethical shopping habits.
Runner-up International Students: Audrey - a fascinating description of types of ghosts, with special reference to the spirits found in Japanese culture.
